The Igbo language, spoken by millions of people in southeastern Nigeria, took center stage at the Vatican during the Christmas Vigil Mass held on Christmas Eve at St. Peter’s Basilica.
In a historic moment celebrating the universality of the Catholic Church, a prayer was read in Igbo during the solemn liturgy presided over by Pope Leo XIV. Adding to the significance of the occasion, an Igbo couple participated in the Eucharistic procession, presenting the offertory gifts before the altar.
The inclusion of the Igbo language and cultural representation underscored the Church’s commitment to embracing its global diversity, reflecting the presence and contributions of faithful from different cultures and nations. It also reinforced the message of unity, love, and inclusiveness that lies at the heart of the Christmas celebration.
For many Nigerian Catholics and Igbo people worldwide, the moment was a source of pride and spiritual affirmation, highlighting Africa’s growing visibility within the global Catholic community.
