Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested four suspected child traffickers and rescued a one-week-old baby girl during a sting operation in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area.
Acting on credible intelligence, officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, stormed a facility known as Mama Maternity at Ifite-Awkuzu in the early hours of 28th October 2025. The operatives rescued the newborn and apprehended four female suspects linked to a conspiracy and child-trafficking network.
Those arrested include Elizabeth Okafor (62), Esther Nweke (48), Ngozi Maanfa (45), and Peace Elijah Moses (25).
Investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired and bought the baby for ₦1,700,000. The purported biological mother, identified as Peace Elijah Moses, was reportedly paid a down payment of ₦350,000 before the child was handed over.
The baby girl has been placed under protective custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc mnips PhD, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Gender Unit, Awka, for discreet investigation and prosecution of all those involved.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding children and intensifying the fight against human trafficking across the State.
