On Wednesday (January 24), Cypriot authorities rescued sixty Syrian migrants from a small boat near Cyprus, where they had been stranded at sea for several days.
InfoMigrants reports that "Among those on board were three children and a man who were discovered unconscious."
Video footage from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Larnaca depicts rescuers lifting what appears to be a baby from a coast guard vessel onto a helicopter.
Upon receiving a report from a merchant vessel about a small wooden fishing boat approximately 30 nautical miles off Cape Greco, Cyprus' southeasternmost point, authorities promptly deployed rescue helicopters and patrol vessels.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Cyprus reported that all migrants, including the four unconscious individuals and three with lower limb fractures, were transported to the hospital.
One of the children later died. Officials noted that they were all dehydrated. According to reports, the boat's occupants, all of whom were Syrians, set sail from Lebanon on January 18.
