Urges Igbos to bury their dead.
The Omu of Anioma, Obi Martha Dunkwu has urged the federal government to give constitutional roles to traditional rulers, stressing that before the government came the communities functioned properly under their sole watch and care.
Obi Martha Dunkwu made the call on Monday December 5th 2023, at her palace in Okpanam, Oshimili North local government area, Delta State, when a delegation from the diaspora representing over 22 milion Nigerians visited the state to present a Global Icon Award for her contributions to the rich African heritage.
The Omu posited that the federal government should initiate the process of formalizing a greater role for traditional rulers in the constitution and not be relegated to electioneering process of endorsements royal blessings for candidates.
“So I am urging the federal government to put traditional rulers in the constitution, because when they were in charge of their villages when we did not have Nigeria, the villages were functioning."
“So let them give them a role in the constitution and hold them responsible."
While harping on the importance of the Omu title, an 882 year old title which would have gone extinct, she stated that the government should expedite actions towards giving roles to traditional rulers and of that of Omuship should be given accelerated hearing, for as an Omu, there are traditional engagements that incapacitates them and the encroachment by the government into their duties is likened to palm oil to Akwa-Ocha (white knitted cloth, a traditional attire of the Aniomas)
Omu Anioma while speaking adviced the Igbos on the need to bury their dead from the Civil War for peace to reign in the land
She also stated that the misconstrued spate of comments stating that Enuani, the Aniomas are Igbo should be avoided stressing that "We won't take it any longer, we are allies with igbos not igbos, the river has separated us, or should we come under Anambra to form a local government?
You have your own problems unsolved but go about anioma lands creating division where there's none, please stop it."
While appreciating the Member representing the Oshimili South state constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Barr Bridget Anyafulu, a woman she tagged a great philanthropist, Omu Anioma instructed Hon Anyafulu to call a meeting of all young anioma women intrested politics to train them to come into politics the right way and not through the back door there by reducing women in politics to nothing.
Omu Anioma while expressing her worries on lost values amongst the youths, she stated that even women have failed the youths, "they have failed to train their children adequately as they should in line with morals, hardwork, dignity in labour, core values, mores amongst others."
She admonished that we put in same effort in the male child as in the female child.
The leader of the delegation from the diaspora Mr. Kenneth Igbani, noted the Omu title is one of the oldest African cultures and Obi Martha Dunkwu has been a good ambassador of the traditional institution, thus the decision to recognize her.
In his words "I bring you great news on behalf of over 22 million people in diaspora."
"We are here to honor a woman who has taken the fight both home and abroad, our one and only global icon of cultural heritage."
He also hinted that the award would had been presented earlier but the Omu couldn't come to the UK because of her traditional engagements which made them push it till this time and also come to her palace harping on a catch phrase that " if the Mohammed doesn't come to the mountain, the mountain would come to Mohammed "
Similarly the member representing Oshimili South constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, spoke highly of the Omu of Anioma and reflected on some of the issues raised by her royal majesty.
“Everyday she makes a comment and if you are reasonable enough you take the comment and read meaning into it, you will understand that she has been playing her role.
“Am happy that she is doing this within the 16 Days of Activism and she is talking about the girl child. She is talking about the rights of the girl child, talking about the role of the woman in the society.
“She is talking about the impact of women participation in politics in the last twenty four years, these are the I she has raised. All the issues she raised here today are very germane,”
She said "parenting has failed, the only thing we can do is to go back to the children and do our best because with this current generation we have lost."
"Lets also apologize to our children and see how we can hand over legacies of morals and values and hopefully this nation can have peace, lets stop the blame game and take responsibility of our homes, let's blame the govt less but ourselves, for if you don't know your children before 10 years then you have lost them."
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Delta State Council Comrade Churchill Oyowe, a Special Guest at the event, stated that the award did not come as a surprise, because the Omu had made her local community to gain global attention by her women rights activism.
“She is a strong voice who has attained international status, but has cascaded all that to the local environment, bringing to mind that when you have global understanding it should be made relevant to your community and she has done that excellently,” he said.
