NUJ Delta Rolls Out 2025 Press Week Activities

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, is set for a historic gathering as it unveils the 2025 Press Week, a week-long celebration designed to reflect, enlighten, and reposition the role of the media in Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.

With the theme, “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification: Economic Implications and the Media’s Strategic Role,” the 2025 edition brings together thought leaders, policymakers, media professionals, and the public to examine one of the most defining economic conversations of the moment. The event is scheduled to run from Sunday, November 16 to Sunday, November 23, 2025, across different locations in Asaba.

Activities will kick off on Sunday, November 16, with a solemn Thanksgiving Service at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, West End, Asaba. Members of the union, partners, and friends will gather at 8:30am to offer prayers of gratitude and seek divine guidance for the week ahead.

The following day, Monday, November 17, journalists will embark on Media House Visits, strengthening collaborations with platforms that continue to shape public opinion and promote responsible journalism.

On Tuesday, November 18, the Press Centre on Mariam Babangida Road will come alive as members converge for a Medical Check and Sensitization Walk beginning at 7:00am. Later at noon, the union will extend acts of compassion through social outreach to orphanages, reaffirming NUJ’s commitment to community welfare beyond the newsroom.

Sportsmanship and camaraderie will take center stage on Wednesday, November 19, as the NUJ faces off with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in a novelty football match at the NTA Asaba Football Field. The match, billed for 4:00pm, promises excitement and friendly competition between two professional communities that serve the public in distinct but complementary ways.

The highpoint of the Press Week comes on Thursday, November 20, when journalists, dignitaries, experts, and stakeholders gather for the Grand Opening Ceremony, Lecture, and Awards at Orchid Hotel, DBS Road, Asaba, starting at 11:00am.
This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Distinguished Senator Joel Onowakpor Thomas, whose insights on tax regimes and exchange rate policies are expected to enrich the national economic discourse.

Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, will grace the occasion as Special Guest of Honour, while Comrade Alhassan Yahya, President of NUJ, will serve as Chief Host.
The Delta State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, will host members and guests as the union celebrates excellence in journalism and reaffirms its role in national development.

The 2025 Press Week Committee, led by Comrade Pere Botu (Chairman) and Comrade Barth Ozah (Secretary), promises a memorable and impactful celebration that blends reflection, empowerment, outreach, and recognition.

As the countdown begins, journalists across Delta State and beyond look forward to a week that strengthens the media’s mandate and deepens its engagement with issues shaping the nation’s economic future.
